The bodhisattva Avalokitesvara embodies the compassion of all the Buddhas. Together with Tara he is the most popular divinity in Tibet, where he is known under the name of Chenrezi. Here he is represented in his pensive, or meditative form. Seated on a basket, he holds a lotus (padma) flower in his left hand.
